Abstract

To realize the effectiveness of the U.S. military and honor the valuable contributions of African Americans in its ranks, it is essential to address the systemic racism and barriers they face within the armed forces. This thesis takes readers through a visual exploration of American conflicts that involved integral involvement from African-American servicemen and women. Despite enduring discrimination and prejudice, African-American service members have played a pivotal role in defending our nation; however, racial disparities continue, hindering their potential and jeopardizing military readiness. Fair access to opportunities and resources within the military must be ensured to correct this, alongside comprehensive efforts to combat racism and foster inclusion. By acknowledging the historical injustices and thereby empowering African-American service members, the military can harness its talents and strengthen its capabilities in safeguarding the nation’s security.
